I'm probably the one person that feels this way, but I just don't get online multiplayer games like Halo and COD. I'm actually pretty good for a noob, but after a few minutes, I get bored. It's just run and gun or camping for the most part.
I don't get how some guys can get lost in these games for hours. And it doesn't really matter what the concept is. That's the bad part.
I prefer well-done campaigns. A decent plot helps too.

Have you tried Gears of War?

name of few that satisfied your criteria
- COD:MW 1 and 2 had great campaigns. Ironically, Black Ops is boring. Half way thru.randommail

i think it's the pacing and theme that makes the difference.
i used to play tfc back in the day and i could play for hours on end. since then i've never found a game that interests me. counter strike came close, but the pacing was slower, it was more realistic (ie. no rocket/nade/conc jumping), and you had to wait for the round to end before you could respawn.
as for themes, i think games based on historical battles, current wars, or futuristic ones just don't appeal to me, so that doesn't leave a whole lot of room for much when those are the majority of whats out there.
just some thoughts.

oh man, HALO 1 on pc. The people used to rage on that game. Such fun times.
You'd have some idiot shouting abuse, so id join his team. And the best thing about halo 1 is that if you drive a vehicle towards a team mate and get out before hitting them it says '[TWAT] was killed by a vehicle'. Team killing gets you banned, so this was a nice way around it. ooooo the rage, ooo the hilarity!.

I've never understood the point of narrative or plot in games.
It's a game. Its raison d'etre is fun.
Where was the plot or story arc in a game of hide and seek or tig, as a child?
Fair enough, FPS's aren't your thing — but they're damn good, mindless, fun when they are.
*shrugs*
- Even the storyline in HL/2, the archetypal decent-narrative game, ended up just getting in the way of Good Honest Fun.detritus
- I guess it's an age thing then.randommail

Unchartered 2: Drakes fortune online multiplayer is pretty decent.

I think multiplayer is a better fast-twitch adrenaline rush kind of experience, because you know you are up against a real person somewhere trying their best to win/kill you.
I notice that I enjoyed it more when I was younger though. Don't play so much of it now a days.

Try playing something besides team deathmatch, the objective based games ad more complexity and require more then run and gun. KillZone2's capture the flag was awesome. You would probably find the class base shooters more interesting. Bad Company 2 is another one that really requires team work and strategy vs. MW2s run and gun.
I would give Killzone 3 a try, the story is supposed to be really good.- there is an open beta demo for KZ3 out FEB3(?) for the multiplayerrusty_ace

I really enjoy tactical servers on COD: World at War. Basically means you have to crouch or if you stand, you have to have sights up. No running and gunning. Most of the servers have their own set of rules (no hip shooting, no blind nades, etc.), but it gives the game a much more enjoyable experience than just fast paced action.

"I guess it's an age thing then."
People are as old as they wish to be.
I'd be surprised if you were much older than I am.

I could never get into the COD series. I was just hooked with the GOW online play because of the competition, range of weapons, and especially the graphics.

I used to be really intimidated by head to head games. Then I discovered Team Fortress 2. Now it's all I play. It's so much fun, and there is very little learning curve to pick up and play, but once you get into a groove, the skill ceiling is very high as well. There are 9 different classes to learn, so there's a bunch of different ways you can play the game.
Also, you can platform, or PC. The PC community is constantly updating too with new weapons and maps.

Only MP FPS I've bothered with for years now.detritus - detritus - do you play on PC or Xbox?DRIFTMONKEY

- I need to get a proper PC to play this. I still play vanilla on Xbox.DRIFTMONKEY
- this is one of the funnest games ever made.. and its multiplay only.e-pill
- Not if you set up your own server, lock everyone out then just sit in the corner it's not.detritus
- LOL, people do that? Probably practicing their rocket jump.DRIFTMONKEY

you have to play multiplayer games for a good amount of time that you are good enough to have fun. I see a lot of people get discouraged and frustrated because they can't keep up.

Crysis 2 might be worth checking out, there is a free beta of the multi-player on x-box right now.

I loved playing Gears 1 & 2 online, Halo 2 & 3 and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.
But the games I played the most in multiplayer were:
Doom & Doom 2
Descent
Quake 1 & 2 & 3
