I need your help guys. We have a client that wants to create something like Big Cartel.
I've tried explaining how complex it would be to have a site like that which is a kind of mini ecommerce site creator.
How do I explain? or do you guys have a ballpark that something similar would cost?

Why not subcontract the makers of BigCartel?

Why not just use Big Cartel... isn't doesn't get any cheaper.

sounds like his client wants to MAKE a Big Cartel clone where he/she can charge folks to have an e-commerce site. he's a big idiot if his biz plan just consists of that goal without digging into the technicals further.

He's an idiot.
You should clone Shopify while you're at it.

Don't try to explain how complex the project would be. It would only bring your abilities into question and/or make them cancel the project completely.
You simply say, "Sure, I can totally do this. The est. budget is $75k. When do you want to have a kickoff meeting?"

Asking them why they is thinking so small? Just make a Google clone and be billionaires.

get a quote from a developer then double it and present to the client. If they are shitty people they will pump the brakes if not you hit the lotto. and get a 50% NON-REFUNDABLE deposit up front.

Were the clients in question posting on Craigslist? Looking for a college student for a great piece to put in the ol' portfolio? Pay based on experience.

Find out what he actually wants to achieve.
If the client wants to be able to provide other people with e-commerce sites, and make them pay a service charge - the client should find another idea.
If they don't have the technical expertise to drive the project, they stand no chance of being able to successfully help others to do the same.
