So, I have this compulsion to go to Detroit, mainly after seeing the Johnny Knoxville doc. I love the look of the place, and think it would be great to visit some of the people involved in the artistic movements and the urban regeneration projects, as well of course as seeing the Michigan Central Station.
Any NTers from/live there - what would be my best approach/time to come/people/things to visit ?

I'm a Southeast MI native - I live way out in the sticks and commute to downtown 5 days a week.

I think the best time would be late Spring/early Summer so you can enjoy what the city has to offer after it's done being cold and before it gets too hot and smelly (literally).

Michigan Central Station is definitely a distinctive landmark - a beautiful ruin if you will. However, don't get your hopes up too high. After you see one 'beautiful ruin' in Detroit they all start to blur together. If that's your type of thing then... well, have at it.

To be honest, Detroit isn't that much different than any other large city other than that most of it is in a state of decay.

    Culture/Arts
If you come in the spring time you can foot it to three amazing artistic institutions. 1st would be the Detroit Institute of Arts, 2nd would be the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (mocad) and the 3rd would be if you came before june ended you could checkout the College for Creative Studies annual Student Show in the amazing taubman building.

    Events / Sports
Spring woudl be a great time to catch a Tiger's game at Comerica Park, if that's your thing. You can catch a decent musical act at just about anywhere around the city - although if you want something a little nicer than you may want to consider riding out to DTE Energy Theatre (or as it was once known - Pine Knob).

    Places
If you're a food lover then Downtown is the place for you - so many good restaraunts. If I had one recommendation it would be to enjoy the many fine eats there are to be had downtown.

Eastern Market is an enjoyable experience on a given sunday afternoon in the springtime. Very colorful, lively place and safe for a family.

There's lots of clubs/bars in the downtown area and the surrounding burbs as well, if that's your thing.

Also, here's something to consider... Michigan has sooooo much more to offer people than Detroit. Detroit is really the tip of the iceberg. Michigan has amazing access to fresh water - myriad small lakes and then the Great Lakes. There is all sorts of outdoor stuff to do if you like being outdoors. Just take your pick - fishing, hiking, biking, camping or even just a road trip to take in some scenery. You should really consider expanding the scope of your trip to some touristy hot spots like Traverse City, Mackinac, Holland...

There's so much more to this State than Detroit. If you have any questions you can drop me an email.
