I'm really at a loss here. Looking for something that has your hands clenched until the end credits, but doesn't rely on too much blood and guts/gore, over-the-top, larger than life villians that miiiight have scared you when you were 5, or the all too self-aware parodies for the popcorn crowd. something that gets in your head. something relevant to today (ie. no frankenstein). and i love sam raimi, but no evil dead/zombieville or saw/turistas slasher type flicks... ugh..
some examples that i think come close:
the shining
the orphanage
rosemary's baby
the original texas chainsaw massacre

Drag me to Hell is actually pretty good, in a return to Evil Dead style for Sam Raimi, much better than the spiderman piss he's been doing for the past few years.

Funny Games
- The original or remake? I've only watched some of the remake and couldn't really get into it.ian
- There'r both very similar. Haneke (original director) only did the remake because americans don't like subtitles.Sep

The Fly
Shallow Grave (Classic)
Eden Lake
The Machinist
Surveillance
Splice (Most hated it... I loved it.)
Repo Men (More SF, but surprisingly good)
Blindness- I quite liked Surveillance though it got pretty poor reviews. In fact I was going to recommend a few of these. Good picks.ian
- The Fly is also a classic, of course.Sep
- Yep. Went in excpecting the worst, and was pleasantly surprised...Sep
- Pleasantly surprised about surveillance, that is.Sep
- Aye, I saw it as a surprise film at a horror festival and quite enjoyed it. Actually saw the machinist there too a different yearian
- year as the surprise film.ian
- Eden Lake was greatMilan
- I wouldn't include Shallow Grave in this category. It's good but not 'suspense/horror'.pang
