Stop obsessing over the past.
These glows, scratches, over-exposures, fake borders, and other imperfections created by Hipstamatic filters do not make you, your life, or your character any more interesting. You can only wish you were as cool as your dad was back in '72.

i feel like i'm digging through my parents old shoebox of photos whenever i see this Hipstamatic crap. It's all contrived and the intent of them is embarrassingly transparent.

sofak, that's pretty much my point... every schlub these days is looking for the "congratulations" with the least amount of effort or talent applied. "Let's just run it through Hipstamatic and pretend that we actually created something... yay". Perfectly fine if it's just for fun, or if you're 11... but don't expect any meaningful praise for this, at least not from anyone with an ounce of respect for photography and history.
Sure, it looks great. Most of the photos produced by that app look great. But it's all fake, it's inauthentic. You're just adding artificial character that your otherwise crappy photo wouldn't have. In fact, it's deceitful to future generations when they look back at these photos and assume they were shot decades earlier than they actually were.
It really strikes me as odd that people here (professional artists, designers, photographers) would actually use this stuff. You'll make fun of the Lens Flare filter at the drop of the hat, but not this?
- Yeah, because carrying a full pro gear around to take random pics is a normal thingernexbcn
- Making cool things isn't a zero-sum game. It is just possible that it's a tool to help nearly everyone produce pleasing...mikotondria3
- ..results with just a little imagination and this app. It's not gonna change the world, but it makes it a bit more beautiful.mikotondria3
- Think of it as artistic karaoke - most of it's not mind-blowing, a lot is bad, but overall it's a positive, affirming process.mikotondria3
