what bugs me about package designs, is most of them cater to promoting a company. a brand. do package designers do anything non-commercial?

I don't get what jetSkii is talking about. What discipline of graphic design isn't primarily commercial?
Maybe once in a generation you get a person like Ed Fella who's typographic work is close to fine art. But that's the minority.
