There must be a reasonable way to copy layers from one project file to a new aep without getting Missing Footage errors and stupid empty icons.
Am I missing something?

import the aep in the new one

^like he said
you can import the actual project file.
then you can view all the layers and compositions from within that project.

yeah. trim down the AE project to the comp/s you need. then just drag that .aep into your current project. everything will come in linked up.

also, if you get errors, dont forget 'set proxy'. (right click an item in your import library > set proxy)
its a life saver.

by trim i mean Reduce Project. highlight the comp/s you want to include in the project window, then File>Reduce Project.
- boom!
did not know that.Hombre_Lobo_2 - yeah, makes it a lot easier when you bring in the aep.Chief
- boom!

pretty shitty you can't copy + paste between docs, but like everyone said, importing the project is the way to go.
somewhat related, this program lets you have multiple instances of AE running at the same time.. though unfortunately it doesn't fix the copying between projects issue:

Thanks everyone. I forgot that one.
Not the most intuitive solution but I've used it before.
