Posters are viewed from feet away, as opposed to inches for a printed sheet. Hence, resolution won't be a problem. Cheers.

tweeking what photographers call "microcontrast" can help, i.e. selectively sharpen edges of hard lines, eyelashes, eyebrows, and such after you upsize can make medium-res images look much sharper from a few feet away without giving you the grainy-ville horror....
- do NOT overdo this approach, it will look cartoon-likevaxorcist

When i need to upscale images for posters or billboards i use "stair interpolation" in PH. With a minimum required of course.
