Working in the USA

So I was having a 'theoretical' discussion with someone about moving to LA for 3-6 months, and a topic of conversation was about me working out there....
Does anyone have experience coming from the EU to the US and working for a short term?
Is it legal for me to work freelance 'in' London but be based in the US (ignore the logistics of being on the other side of the world for now)?
Cheers
Stu

You're not allowed to do any productive work on a tourist visa.
I was employed by a UK company with a US office, and this is what I was told when "visiting" for 90 days.

By and large, immigrations are all more or less the same everywhere in the world (some 2nd and 3rd world countries excepted ... ); as graham said, you can't get a job or freelance without a valid work permit. I'm in London right now on a tourist stamp in my passport, and I would dearly love to freelance or take a black job to keep body and soul together until a permanent offer comes, but sadly ...

You can get away with it for a few month, but on the long run they will catch you.
You can use a visa waiver and stay declaring that you will not work, and and make a contract with EU jurisdiction.
on the long term, you can offer equity of a UK based LTD to your employer and work out an L2 (i think it was) managerial visa to work in the US...

Basically, if you sit on a chair in an office in the US, under a 90 day tourists visa, it's classed as working therefore illegal (madness, but true). But, it also depends on the company that you'll be 'working' for and their attitude. Personally, I found the HR departments in the US (NYC) are tight as a gnats chuff when it comes to working without the proper visa.
I know a stack of stylists and photographers, based in the UK but work/freelance frequently in the US... I think they all have an 01 or EB1 visa, I forget which one it is now.

B-2 Tourist visa holders are not allowed to work in the united states
Persons admitted to the United States under a B-2 Tourist Visitor Visa are not allowed to work or receive any kind of payment while staying in the United States. Foreign nationals who wish to work in the United States must apply for a work visa, such as a H-1B or H-2B Visa.
Download the B-2 Tourist Visa Application Guide and learn what activities you are allowed to do in the United States on a B-2 Tourist Visa.Inmigratation says...

There is a visa (B1 I think, 6 months) you can get that allows you to telecommute (i.e. work for a UK company) whilst you are out there. You will need proof of this employment and a good reason to be in the states.
But if 3 months is ok, just got as a tourist (say you are going on a road trip) and work from your laptop in your apartment. I know plenty of people that have done this with no problems.

If you sit in an american wifi cafe, updating your company blog or retouching images all day long on your laptop while you get paid in euros by your european company into your paypal account.... then you're fine....
