I humbly ask if anyone knows how to create a texture very similar to the black noise you see around the edges of this David Plunkert illustration? I thought maybe the use of a xerox machine but it looks so fine tuned.

Complex fruit's kraft paper (brown paper bag) suggestion is right on. Scan it in, and make sure it's not even close to perfectly flat. The waves in the paper, when scanned, will create great deep shadow gradients, especially if you don't close the scanner lid. Done this myself to amazing results.
