Time Machine Question

So I just had to send my MBP out for repair - the videocard went dead. Luckily I didn't have to pay anything; it was covered under an NVidia warranty.
Anyhow, they replaced the whole logic board. Since bringing it home, and trying to do a backup to Time Machine, it's treating the computer as a whole new computer. Time Machine tells me that the backup is too large for the backup disk. It's basically thinking that it needs to do a fresh, new backup of my external drive and the computer itself. It will not let me perform a backup.
What should I do? Should I wipe the backup drive completely clean and then just start performing a brand new fresh backup? Try as I might I cannot get it to backup at all.
Thanks.

i suggest you go purchase a larger external drive to be able to use your time machine for the backup.. why kill all your old info on that external for the new puter? since also you had to pay nothing as you mentioned.. externals today price wise are very affordable and cheap.

you need to get the MAC address from your new machine and swap it in the backup, so it'll recognize it as the same machine again.
