I want to import a PSD into Ind, cut out
with a multiply layer with shadow detail. When I import into Indd (CS3) it comes through as flat image with white background??

Dude, easiest thing to do is just do the whole page background in photoshop, flatten it, and place it as a tiff.
Perhaps a bit more work, but at least you know all your transparency effects/shadows etc will display properly, and you won't have to mess around with clipping paths and stuff in indesign...

I'm assuming that you've checked >object >clipping path?
- PaulM740
no clipping paths involved. Layer one> multiply with shadow detail, layer two> image masked back through to show detail - make sense?
- goldieboy0
your words 'cut out' made me think you might have paths. I'll have a think...

it works importing into illustrator - just not indesign? (CS3)

^ layered psd with mltiply layer for shadow dropped into illy.

Indesign not recognising multiply/transparency? Imports with white background

InDesign has some issues if you apply multiply to drop-shadow effect (always...) to a content placed on PSD's first layer.
It is a known bug.- Convert the drop-shadow effect to a layer...ItalianStallion

it's not a drop shadow - just a multiply layer

I've done this before (in CS4) ! I'm working on another studio's Mac (on CS3)

If it is only one layer that is affecting the transparency in inDesign, could you not copy and paste the image in the exact same position, then hide the layer in question in the first image and then for the duplicated image hide all layers except the layer which uses multiply and apply that effect within inDesign instead? Hope that makes some sense.

nor really a drop shadow problem - just a problem bringing getting indesign to recognise multiply layers on the psd import

When you Place the PSD (not import), check "Show import options" and make sure there's no background layer turned on.
