does being on a shared hosting diminish your ranking in google?

There is no way to know for certain what factors Google use, but it's highly unlikely. The theory I've heard related to this is that another site on the shared server might get hit with a penalty, and because you share the same IP address, you get hit as well.
That strikes me as pretty unlikely because Google would then be handing out penalties to huge numbers of sites that don't deserve them. So I would say no, but then again, you're always better off with a dedicated server or virtual dedicated for all kinds of reasons. Also to be super safe you can always get your own IP address, at which point Google has no way of knowing you are on shared hosting.

Besides all of the BS and smoke & mirrors that we all have been told to believe about SEO and rankings, there are only (2) absolutely proven factors that increase SEO for your website:
• Paid advertising (Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc...)
• And website relativity (Articles, links to your website, popularity, etc...)Don't believe the hype!
