guy i know wants to be a vinyl cutter.
i have a job requiring a truck to letter so i sent him the specs 3 weeks ago and placed the order with him.
job is due in 2 days from now.
he emails last night and says that his funds are low and cant get the vinyl in without payment -
i had tried to pay in full to him 3 weeks ago and again 2 weeks ago so that this wouldn't happen.
he then said that if he got payment now, he could have the vinyl by next week.
i told him that i needed it in two days.
he says well- i cant do it this time... but next time we'll get it done!
    next time?

luckily we found another vendor that can have it to us tomorrow- and 5% cheaper.

    any other bum vendor stories?

What the guy doesn't have a dime of credit get the vinyl in. He even has to pay his suppliers up front? Can you say doors shut any day now.

sad thing is that i could have had a half dozen other jobs to send his way -

    • His loss. You're not a charity.ETM
    • not a charity - but we were just starting out once too, hate to see him lose out so early on.bjladams
    • Yeah, but you can't run their business for them.ETM
    • He had to have known he didn't have the funds and yet rejected your offer to pay upfront.ETM
    • i'm not defending him- just saying i tried to make it possible for him to complete- yet he failed anywaybjladams
    • No I get. I'm saying don't feel bad. You did more than your part. You tried to help.ETM

where to start... vendors are almost as bad as designers :D

Tough situation. If you really feel for the guy you can give him one more chance on something that may not be as time sensitive or as important. Then let him gain your vendor trust back.

Usually this would just be considered bad business, but if you know the guy and want to try to help, then try to help.

I had a similar situation with a sign company. I gave them 4 weeks to produce something for me and kept calling to make sure all was good with it. finally the last week I call to make sure it will be ready and he says he totally forgot and can't get it done in time.

I found a vendor who could and they get most of my business now. You also have to think about the company getting you out of a pinch. They worked and did everything you needed to meet the deadline, so you want to give them more business as well.

    • i dont really feel bad for him - just disappointed that he'd try to start a business with this kind of gumpbjladams
    • so send the work to the company who got you the work for cheaper. sounds like a good company.capn_ron
    • already done.bjladams

I should point out since the OP is trying so hard to help a guy he knows out, to look at the reverse -- a guy who knows you was not totally honest with you and almost screwed you last second. Just saying, it's a 2 way street. He didn't seem to try so hard for you.

Maybe I am just cynical and tired of trying to help people who don't help themselves.
