I now use Open Atrium. It is free, easy to download and set-up on your web server. The GUI looks better and runs better then Basecamp and basically has the same feature. It also has some really nice video tuturials...

I've been using it as a board member for local AIGA chapter and it's been pretty useful. Not sure how it works in a office environment, but think it would be helpful.

I've worked at two production companies while they implemented it. In both cases after about a year nobody used it and they abandoned it.

Yeah I use it. It's rad.
If you want to hook up a billing platform to it - Cashboard has the best integration. http://getcashboard.com

I did because a client used it and it seemed pretty good, particularly so if you have remote workers/multiple offices.
Like all these things it does need everyone playing the same game though otherwise it's a pain in the arse.

Basecamps usefulness is determined by employee's and clients willingness to use it.
If you don't have one or the other it becomes worthless.
That being said I think it's great and wish that I could acclimate more clients to using it. It makes it fairly simple to share files and feedback on a per project basis. It also helps keep you organized by collecting communications from clients in one location for a given project versus having to sift through hundreds of emails in an inbox to find some feedback or revisions.
All in all I would say it's worth it - if that is you can get your employees and clients to use it.

Also,
I completely disagree with the Open Atrium bit - the GUI is fugly web2.0 clusterfuck with bad usability. It was also horrendously slow on the webserver i tried it on. As a free tool it's fine but be aware you get what you pay for.
