My boss wants me to implement a few screen captures of the software we are talking about in a flyer... only the screen grabs are extremely low quality (obviously). I know why it is low res.. but I want to know if there is an option other than opening it in photoshop, changing it to 300dpi and saving it in cmyk.
I've also tried converting it to index color and changing the resolution that way.. looks the same.
Any thoughts? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks guys

i've had great success using alien skin's "blow up" to res-up images.

index color has to do with gifs. don't do that.
you have to try to get them as big as you can and then size the image down, which will raise the resolution. depending of the size you need to print them, of course.

use the computer with the biggest monitor. ;-)

There are two options for blow-up screengrabs:
You either lie when representing the image, interpolatating details, adding in pixel content that didn't originally exist.
Or, you make an exact representation, maintaining the pixel blockiness of the form, in which case you scale up using Nearest Neighbour in your image Size dialogue.
If you're going to go the former route, I'd suggest you download a vector browser and re-mock up the project content in Illustrator or whatever. It'll look wrong though. Always does.

Isn't a screenshot intrinsically perfect quality?

I've done lots of software boxes, and the method we always use for making screenshots print-ready is what detritus said- select nearest neighbor option and resize.

Yeh, primarily you need to educate your boss as to what exactly a screen image is, and the options that fact presents.. Always have done the nearest neighbor interpolation, people are used to seeing it, they know what it means - a vectory recreation is a lie and people know it.

yes, it's kind a like he bought a kia (72dpi) but think it's a porsche (300dpi).

Sorry but I have too ask, why?
A screenshot is just that, capturing what's before you. Under no circumstances are you going to get anything better than what you've started with.

screen cap as an indexed png, as long as the size can be enlarged by whole percentages, the quality should remain.
or just frame a monitor up to a camera on a tripod
