How do you do this, I had a prog once that did it but can't remember what it was called. I never get chance to sit and watch dvds but could stick a couple on my phone - suggestions please, the cheaper the better!

mac the Ripper or hand brake

mac the ripper - rip the dvd, put in on your hd instead.
mpeg streamclip - compress it, change format, etc. (as you wish).

handbrake is a transcoder that will give you a playable file straight away, but it won't rip a lot of discs, depending on how they're encoded. mac the ripper is... a ripper, you'll need to convert the results with something else, but there are some discs that it can't decrypt. dvd2one will successfully strip the copy protection on more discs than any other app, but it costs money.

I use RipIt [ http://thelittleappfactory.com/r… ]
You have to pay, but the first 10 rips are free, totally basic, idiot-proof software, but does the job nicely, compresses too.

Dvdshrink is free and has a lot of features.
The use a converter like ImToo to compress to iPhone.
