Domain Value

A couple weeks ago I emailed an individual at the email listed on a whois lookup about purchasing the domain. Currently it's set up as one of those fake 'search engines'.
Just today I got a reply telling me to email their 'representative' and include my offer amount for consideration.
This is a good name, but it's a .org domain which I'd like for a non-profit I'm working on. My question is, what are the best tools for determining the value? I don't want to lowball them and not get a response, but I also don't want to make too high an offer. Anyone ever done this? Thanks

If it's a domainer they're expecting thousands.

@raf
"domainer"?
and thousands as in a couple grand? this is after all a .org. so i'd think i have a little hope here. but maybe not..

How is the domain related to the not-for-profit? Is it their actual registered name or just something that you want to use?
- SteveJobs0
if i can get this name, the non profit will also be called this - it's that good. i have a back-up that uses this term, but this would be ideal.
sad there are so many squatters on .org's. there should be a stricter law against it.

Its hard to determine a value. I am not a fan of the sites that tell you your value as they use arbitrary criteria and you get them all over the map. I had a domain valued by one at $19 and valued by another at $3749. Maybe try a couple, throw out the highest and lowest, then average and you get an idea. Show the owner how you arrived at the bid.

so i guess i'm looking for domain appraisers then? who are considered the best? will i have to pay for this service? sorry new to all this and i suck at google this morning

I think it costs about $30, and most domain registrars (Godaddy etc) will do it. But keep in mind, this might not give you much more than a more credible sounding e-mail. Ultimately the domain is theirs and they can sell it for whatever they want.
You can try going to a domain reseller site like buydomains.com and checking how much different names go for to get a better idea of the prices. Obviously a dot org is worth less than dot com in most cases, but not that much less. The value should have some basis in how common a search term it is.

I tried to buy orrinward.com. The squatting company were willing to release it for $9,000.
.org won't matter if it's for a name that sound sellable. My pretty unique name had a price tag of $9000... If yours is vaguely sellable they will rinse you for all you have for it...

final bump. imma email them later today with an offer they'll probably refuse

can anyone recommend an escrow service if they do in fact accept my offer?

You can try lowballing, not sure what type of domainer/squatter it is. It's a huge industry. A domainer keeps hundreds or thousands of domains, usually has a discount at the registrar. Then a domain sells and covers all that cost and more.
Owning a trademark only helps if it was registered before the domain.
Here's how they make millions:

i sent them an offer and kinda low-balled, but again it's a .org, so i don't know if i was in a ballpark or nowhere near it.. we'll see.
i actually found another that's very similar, but not quite as good or easy to remember, and it's a little over my offer for the one i really want, so maybe that'll work toward my advantage.
one interesting thing is that alexa doesn't have any data on this domain. is that normal? according to the whois, it was created back in 2001, but i don't know if that's the same owner or not.

I've sold a domain from an offer through the Network Solutions service.. the buyer is able to make an anonymous offer, they do escrow service.

^ thanks, i'll check out their service later. still waiting to hear back from them on my offer
