Flickr Privacy Question

For the love of God, can someone please give me a clear answer on how privacy works on Flickr?
I have some photos from a hiking trip we took Saturday that include scenery photos and photos of my fiance and I. I don't like posting public photos of us on Flick, but would like to upload some to a gallery so that my family can see them.
I know how to make them private, but how do I specify to, say, my mom, that she can see them?
Does my mom log in with a password I provide? Can she see them without a Flickr account?It's confusing as all hell from the documentation I've been reading. Ideally, I'd like to have one gallery of pictures, with some of the pictures private, and if I send the whole thing to my mom, she can see all pictures, and if other people see the gallery they just see the public ones.

I think you can make them private (for flicker communitah) but still share the gallery on an external site for your friends outside of flickr to see
