tell the tech guys how to do the tech, and soon they'll tell you how to design.

Boz - do you work in Chicago? By the sound of your first post you might very well be working in my office this afternoon.

Nah..
I'm probably too harsh.. I have had no problems with these guys..and they do a good job overall and follow my designs, I just get upset when I'm arguing about something for no reason. We all know that Flash is the best solution in this, the most efficient solution and when I have to keep explaining why we should use it because it's obvious and there's no reason not to, especially when it makes a better solution, I get upset and not at people really, but this whole campaign against flash that's the cause of this. A senseless and completely unreasonable campaign of hatred that makes all of our lives actually worse not better as developers and designers.

1) get the requirements and the deadline.
2) be objective, and offer the level of effort for each and mention long-term implications if there are any.
3) let whoever signs your paycheck decide based on the information given
4) do the work.
5) collect paycheck
or
1) keep arguing with them
2) get nowhere
3) repeat step 1

count to 10....breath.

that's no good reason...but if it's a problem they have to solve, then let them solve it. let them take the time they want. meanwhile do the 10 min. flash thing, you never know.
- hellrod0
How much time will it take without doing it in Flash?
- oey0
I think they're fighting right now...

If I was told by someone, that they could do something far more quickly in Flash - and that there's no reason not to; I'd probably spend two hours explaining why it's a bad idea too.
Simply -> Flash is a technology you should choose as a last resort .. you choose it because there's no other way of achieving your goal, not because it's 'quicker' or 'easier'.
- disagree. sometimes quicker and easier are the reasons why its better. budgets and timelines are real.ifeltdave
- ... I've been thinking this way since 1998. It's a not a new hatred.. I think it's sensible.lukus_W
- and that's why it was said.. Flash is not the last resort technology..that's just nonsense.Boz

it will take them a lot longer.. they have to code out a bunch of shit in JS because the thing needs to be like a text ticker/ banner that utilizes specific fonts and gradient fill and black outline, deal with CSS and crossbrowser compatbility and even that won't work properly because they can't do those effects and they have to be there in order to make those quotes pop from the background.
Unfortunately, this type of stuff would have been easily solved if we had some static content and could do graphcis in PNG.. so make those quotes as bitmaps and done.. I'd be fine with that, but those images have to be dynamic from xml file and rotate and slide in and out and fade and so on.
For them to do that in JS/CSS it will be a lot more work and the results won't even come close to the visuals I can do in Flash with filters and all that and have External Interface communicate with JS and then just have them pass text and source url and so on to Flash and flash does the job and it looks great and it's dynamic.
But no.. when you are dense and retarded you go hitting a head against the wall.
I quit really.. I just gave them to do whtaever they want.. I offered to help them and make that thing in Flash in 10 mins and all they had to do is integrate it into html as a div holding that flash piece with transparent background.
Now they can go and do their own thing and deal with how that crap might not look the same on all browsers and client bitching and moaning to them.
- Boz0
and what's worse..these same assholes will go and try to fault me down the road for design or wahtever if a clients starts bitching.. That's where I would really beat the shit out of all these "JS is the way" shithead developers.

ha, i feel you. last year this photographer hired me to build a site for him. he referenced all these examples of Flash based sites. then he says "but i don't want to use that Flash stuff. i'm a simple straight forward guy, not Flashy."
I spent easily an hour trying to explain that Flash didn't mean Flashy.
BTW: Flash is not a last resort technology. Like anything else there are situations when it just makes sense... period.
- There are situations, in the last resort, where it does make sense ;)lukus_W
