pr2, when I see people using either product, I think...
"Hey look at me, my iPad proves that I'm hip and savvy, even though I use less than 20% of it's capabilities."
"Hey look at me, my Kindle proves that I'm an avid fan of literature, not just a stay-at-home-mom."Neither are products of true functionality.

i love to read books by simply holding those in my hand so i never actually understood the appeal of ebook. plus don't let me start with an over sized iphone with no keyboard (ipad) - this i can't comprehend for shit.

wow I dont know what to have trouble believing first, any help?
here are my options.a) this thread is from 2010
b) the kindle is not only still around but they are releasing version 3
c) I'm all for the retro look, but why the retro functionality? If I wanted retro, I can still buy books (which I don't necessarily consider them retro just yet)

After the iPad was announced, the Kindle advertising went distinctly female and mom.
The TV spots don't show any men.- but but... I'm sure they are mom/ "serious readers"Miguex

What an obsolete product. Just look at the damn thing. Looks like it was made in the 1980's along with this thing:
Spend the extra money for an iPad and get the additional gajillion features that thing has. Oh, and it has color. What is this the fucking 50's or something? I can't believe some things are still being made in black & white.
- go read some research and figure out what eInk is. It's a better design for READING.zarkonite
- i just did some research. the findings are inconclusive and the iPad is super cool.iCanHasQBN
- it's not meant to be a multi-task device. Serious readers don't need a gazillion distractions.monkeyshine
- no such thing as gazillion. it's gajillion.iCanHasQBN
- < you can watch a movie, text and talk while reading a book. lol.akrok
- Serious readers read papers man, don't even try to bring that up cause no one is buying itMiguex
- you dont have to do all that stuff WHILE reading a book.iCanHasQBN

There's also the Kindle app for iPad. I have the Kindle app for iPhone and it's great because if I'm out and about with some time on my hands, my books are synced and I can pick up where I left off on the device. That rocks!

For avid readers of text-based books (not those with a great deal of imagery), the Kindle is a nice product. My folks swear by it, as they are avid travelers and often take their Kindle with them—which contains over fifty books at a time.
But if you need more than a device that will allow you to carry tons of books without the tons of books, and occasionally read some online stuff, the Kindle's not for you.

The advantage of a Kindle is that it's less straining on the eyes, and you can order a book in less than 5 minutes. For me, it's been collecting dust because I found most of the books I buy are design related, and I need to see it in color.

i'll buy it if it drops in price. like $50-$60.... just to keep somewhere in the house to display black and white novels.
but most things that i read would be better with a color screen and photos. i played with the kindle and navigating it's functions is annoying. rather surf via a touchscreen. i think the iPad is the way to to. But the iPad is still expensive. Waiting for it to drop to normal pricing vs new gadget on the block from Apple price.

I really don't get the Kindle, it's like an old calculator but with letters. Get an Ipad, or a real book.
- You don't need to charge it - it's nice for reading .. It's small and portable - and you can get a lot of books on the device.lukus_W
- .. and it's only £109lukus_W
- lukus knows his kindle!
i think its niceHombre_Lobo

Is surfing faster on V3?
- zaq0
I love my Kindle. It works especially well with InstaPaper

The wifi and surfing is just a bonus, mainly a device for reading books. The display doesn't make your eyes tired like the backlight of an Ipad might, and the battery lasts for a month...

The K3 is a huge improvement. The contrast is much better and the device is smaller than the K2. I likey.
Why would you ever surf on a Kindle...you can, of course, but why? You can also listen to music.

The third version does look better. The connection speed for surfing is shit on the second version though.
