ok, Im trying to avoid the tedious task of stitchin together a bunch of screengrabs from google. time is short here. im desperately tryin to find a high res topographical map of amsterdam.. anyone have one or link to one?

You don't have to stitch them together from Google. Use Firebug and enlarge the frame size to be bigger than the screen, then use Aviary to take a screenshot of the whole page.

If you've never used Firebug you might find it tricky. Install Aviary as well.
1. In Firefox, get the map to look how you want it (correct zoom and style)
2. Use Firebug's 'Inspect' to select elements of the page that you don't want there - The top nav bar for the page, the buttons on the actual map overlay, and the little point indicator. Select each one separately, then click edit -> delete whats inside.
3. When you have your page cleared of all the stuff you don't want, select the 'map' class and change the height property to something huge, then add a width property to something huge.
4. Write a Div to contain the map with width and height larger than the map. This makes Aviary not crop the map frame to screen size.
5. Use Aviary to capture the whole page.It might seem like a lot but it's actually quite simple. A slightly easier way than deleting all the unnecessary crap is to use the maps embed code in a simple page of your own and just increase the frame sizes.

I just tried it out myself but the image is still loading for me. (I'm on slow internet). the fastest way is to the map you want at the top left position, grab the embed code. Then change the iframe size to something huge, and then the 'map' size to something huge. If you don't change the 'map' Google won't extend the map beyond that point and you'll have a largely empty iFrame.

If you like I can probably do it for you. I just need you to get the map to the furthest top-left you want it at the correct zoom, then post the embed code here.
It is very simple but its early in the morning so I haven't been explaining it well.

Yes that should do. I will give it a go a bit later. Here's one I made earlier (wont be right as it's the default zoom)

Even though you don't need it, here ya go. Sorry about the delay, I had a job interview and then Google Maps in firefox seems to struggle a bit with a 5000px wide iFrame.

Just screen grab everything you want at the same zoom, and sic PS on it with File | Automate | Photomerge...
