Packing for Movers?

Anyone here used movers to move out of an apartment / house? I'm moving next Thursday - moving about 90% of my stuff into storage, and the rest into my fiance's place short term while we (hopefully) work towards buying the condo we want.
Is there any etiquette for packing for movers, such as something about packing too many books in a single box, or stuff being too heavy?

why don't you ask the movers? Too many books in a box and it's bound to break.

all i know is when i moved my vinyl had to be spread across like 15 boxes. it's easier to deal with two semi-heavy boxes versus one box that is going to kill the movers and also be more likely to be dropped, etc. god forbid they would have dropped and shattered my rick astley records...

wrap very well, especially the corners of pictures and furniture

If they can, get them to deliver some empty boxes, then you're covered against unexpected sizes and broken boxes. (Favourites to moan about).
Every time I've moved (and I've done UK>Aus) there were 2 standard sizes, tea-crates and book boxes which were smaller (can't overfill).
Never had issue with weight as the moving blokes were typically built like brick shitters.
It's logical really, they want to get everything in the truck neatly and quickly so lots of different boxes and bags will soon piss them off...

I usually do the moving myself...
My best trick is not to pack anything out of chest-of-draws... Just pull out the full draws... load the empty carcass in the truck and put the draws back in. Too easy.

• Use the same size box. If you don't, it makes it harder to pack the truck.
• Label every box.

last time i moved, movers filled up the truck slapped me with an invoice 3x times the quote and threatened to dump all my stuff in the front lawn if i don't pay... in the end i was down $300 (deposit) and half my house outside... oh and it started to rain

uhaul sells some nice varying sized boxes that are designed to be stacked together. they also have illustrations on them to give you an idea of what to pack in the box to keep them a manageable weight.
just pack it so that its comfortable for you to lift and carry up / down stairs. the movers should be good with it if you are.

For heavy stuff like books and vinyl you can get smaller boxes (usually sturdier as well) designed for that. Makes it easier to transport etc. But don't fret, I've seen a (as in 1) mover shift a washing machine on his own. They're used to it. Although they're never impressed with my endless collection of comic longboxes.
- they'll use dollys, too, so they wont be actually lifting some of the stuffifeltdave
