Anyone used both a 15" and 17" MBP? Which would you recommend buying? Is the extra screen space of the 17" worth the extra cost/size?
I do a variety of print and video/animation work. Photoshop, Illy, InDesign, Final Cut, and AE.
Sorry if this has already been posted elsewhere. I checked the filter but didn't find anything.
Cheers.

15"... The 17" is too big to be portable. You have to get a bigger bag too in order to carry it. If you need a bigger screen, it's better to connect to a bigger screen. I have a friend who got the 17" and wishes he got the 15". I took his advice and I'm truly glad i did.

are you travelling lots? if so 15" is fine. if not, why not go 27" with the i7

I have the 17 and 13inch. I like it but if I had a choice again, I'd get the 15". 17" is just a little too large in regards to portability.

yeah... 17" is far less portable than the 15". Just buy the 15" and spend the couple hundo you would have spent upgrading to the 17" on a nice lcd monitor.

^^ that
15 and use the price difference to get a big ass monitor

The 17" is such a bitch to travel with & I still connect it to an external monitor at home or at work. I've got a 15" now that I'm much happier with as far as mobility goes.

bigger is better. I bought the 15" and is to small for print layout but I have it plugged into a 17" monitor and it seems to be plenty of real estate and use the laptop screen as a palette monitor.

I had the first 17" Powerbook and carried it with me everyday. So what, you buy a large bag. I cannot imagine why you'd want a smaller screen. Especially if you use After Effects.

It seems to be a matter of strict objectivity... nothing subjective going on here. Move along.

I'm torn, 'cause I work portable on a regular basis (no external monitor) on an older 15" and it seems like I'm always wanting more screen space, on AE in particular.
Leaning toward the 15" though, for reasons mentioned above. Thanks for the thoughts and suggestions all. Lovin' this site :)

If you're looking for extra space for your AE you could always get an iPad and use AirDisplay (which uses BlueTooth) to turn it into an extra monitor which you could use for the misc panels and inspectors. It's like a mini extra portable monitor. I've never used this personally but Gizmodo gives good reviews. Plus you'll have an iPad.
Anyways, just another possible option.
- that would be wicked.imakethepictures
- And ironically, it would work for Flash development too.CyBrain
- that sounds interesting but in the end you would be hauling around more that you would with a 17in O_0sofakingbanned
- Sounds cool as hellblogger
- @sofaking. You're right but on the other hand, you'll have an iPad which is even more convenient than a laptop.fyoucher1

I've been looking at macbooks as well and after working on a 15in. and playing around with the 17in. it seems the 17in is the way to go. Now I've always heard people talk about the !&in being to big for portability... I cant really see how. can someone give me an example of a situation they've experienced???
Ive been considering renting one and trying it out before I buy.

15
I have 17 and 15, I use 15 a lot more. I save my 17 for gaming. 17 is just too heavy and big to carry.

15 w/ external

I have an older 17" and my next MBP will be 15", especially that they come in hi-res now.
BTW 15" matte ones are some 200 gram lighter than glossy, due to removed glass panel.
