Soooo, I bought my first computer in 10 years (don't laugh, I've been broke as hell) and wanted software recommendations.
I'm looking for utility software that I may eventually need. I ask because I've been using PCs for the past few years, and I've fallen out of the mac game pretty bad.
One program that I know I will buy is Transmit FTP. Beyond that, no clue.

store and share files. very useful wether sending clients work, printers files, or friends music.

+1 for CODA.
basic stuff I use:
VLC <- play all media types
Audacity <- edit audio
Transmission <- torrents
UnRarX <- unrar stuff
Skype <- if you use for international / conf calls
Scrivener <- writing

http://getcloudapp.com/ - still little bit buggy but a great app

http://adium.im/ is a great free messenger that covers all the others.
And you can get Eazy-E icons for it, more importantly.- + encrypted chat, necessary for discussing nefarious activities online!acescence

What people said is pretty much on target
-Transmission for torrents
-VLC to be able to play any music/ movie file
-UnRARX for zip files
-Coda for web design
-Transmit for FTP
-Adobe Creative Suite
-Little Snitch for when you crack Adobe Creative Suite (just kidding, don't do that:)Along with Transmission, I've found a download manager is pretty essential for mass DLing stuff from Rapidshare and other sites. Using one called Speed Download right now, curious if people have another good recommendation for an app like this.

NeoOffice or OpenOffice until you know you need more
CoRD if you do RDP
Another vote for Scrivener for writing
Billings/Daylite for business stuff like CRM,invoicing

Check out Radio Silence if you need an app cheaper than Little Snitch but with the caveat that it blocks ALL connections made by the app you specify (unlike little snitch that you can block individual connections made by the app based on the destination hosts).

Most of the above still apply, i'll just add these:
— Little Ipsum
— XScope
— Beamer
