iPad instead of iPhone?

I'm out of contract and need to upgrade from 2G 1st gen to a new phone. I was thinking of just getting an iPad with wifi/3G pay-as-you-go instead of an iPhone. Have any switched over completely?
Most of us pretty much text and email instead of call anyways.
My cell bill was $276 for July cause I was international last month, even with the proper intl data roaming and intl call extras set in place. It's going to be $129 through September 1st to cover any intl text or data charges that didn't get charged in July. (at&t suggested this as a safety net).
So I'm pissed about July, not stoked about paying over a grand this past year on iPhone charges, and don't want to sign on for another 2 years at that rate.
What would you do?

the first thing you'll need to get is a satchel:

neither can make calls, so technically they are exactly the same, minus the screen size.
do you want a large screen or you want portability?

Good point. I just want out of that annual $1000 cell plan basically.
A larger screen would be cool the more I think about it.

How would you even use an iPad as a phone? The current OS doesn't even have multitasking so you couldn't browse the web and make a call at the same time. It seems like a really bad idea to me.

can you buy an ipad and then get a megacheap pay as you go phone?

call at&t and ask them if they'll sell you an iphone with *just* a data/text plan and no voice

why not get an iPad and use Skype? I have to do that with my iPhone because it doesn't work that well as a phone in my apartment and drops calls all the time.

Keep using your iPhone with some good plan. Get an iPad if you want to. What's there to say?
