I can't believe so many people in those thread recommended GoDaddy. It's like someone asked where is a nice restaurant and you pointed to McDonalds:D

Anyway I think it's hard to get much from those threads, people mostly just list the host they currently use, and a lot of times you can get stuck with a company that isn't the best out of familiarity.
First question to think about is what kind of hosting you are looking for since the services vary so much. Is cheap shared hosting OK, or will you need a dedicated server of some kind (real or virtual)?
Are you looking for something that is partly managed (category I would put MT in), managed hosting where the company sets up everything, or a completely unmanaged solution where you set it up yourself including the OS and server?

very apples to oranges, yes..... I remember "a small orange" are they still around?
Note also that hosting companies tend to come and go, and/or get bought, and/or have the smart system admins leave, so who was good one year may suck the next...

I'm thinking of switching hosts to Servage. It looks like they have referral benefits for both parties. The person referring gets 2 months free, and the new account gets some extra diskspace and bandwidth.
I found a bunch of referral coupon codes already, but I'd rather give the benefits to someone here than a complete stranger. So, if you host with Servage, just tell me your referral code and I'll sign up right away. Can't wait too long though...

I love host gator, although i'm not sure today....
they just sent me email to tell me this.
• World Class 1100 sq ft Gym complete with lockers and showers (gators sweat a lot).
• Internet Cafe / LAN Party stations (gators game a lot, see sleeping quarters).
• Dual 23.6” Monitor setups.
• Game room complete with arcade games and full size pool table. Also (2) 55" Flat screen tvs.
• Outside deck connected to the game room, for BBQ's and get togethers.
• Sleeping quarters, for when you just want to nap a bit. (gators are sleepy a lot, see Lan Party).
• Black and Decker Coffee pot, The 12 Cup kind (nothing but the best).
• Vending machines that take credit cards (Gators only carry 100s).
• Really cool lights that only turn on when you walk by!

Hostgator have been great for me so far... best of the cheapo host packages IMO as their support is generally quite fast and helpul. I used to use Startlogic for my cheap packages and they were frickin awful.. never again.
