I don't consider a test at a job interview working for free - jeez.
As I said its a small company and not an agency - they will not be clued up like an agency.
Recruitment process is a big deal for a small company and they wont have the procedures in place to ensure they hire the right designer so a practical test gives them tangible evidence to base a decision on. All depends on how much he wants the job...Really couldn't give a fuck to be honest - I work for myself and have a big portfolio and ten clients who will vouch for me.
