anyone got a pantone book (new/old) lying around that I can buy on the cheap? worth a shot...

the colors fade, don't bother with any that are too old. I bought some from my printer guy, he gets new ones every year, might try that if you've got printers you work with.

Storage is pretty much the key to extending the life of your Pantone books. I have all of mine securely stored in the case they came in (I got the Survival Kit from 2006), and the colour are still bright.
That having been said, though, Pantone books are also at risk of damage on the swatches from mere rubbing. Which is to say, transfering their colours onto the backs of the card stock above them from rubbing against each other.
- yeah, the rubbing is much more of a problem if the books are stored correctly.Amicus

what the fuck are you guys doing to your pantone books?

yes the swatches rub, some colour comes off, they get scratched. but side by side, it's still the same.

we like to make fun of a guy that i work with a lot as his pantone book is quite old and alot of the colors are way off now- esp the one with a lot of cyan in them- he leaves it in he truck pretty much all the time and calls it his 'field guide'
fellers.com was having a sale a little while back on them- dont know if they still are, but might be worth calling them up, dont see it on their site anywhere
