apparently ICANN is about to allow all sorts of new TLDs. .ny, .chi, etc. Probably in the next year or so.

^ What's the point? Try buying CocaCo.la and see what happens.
They should be getting rid of TLDs. What's the point of .org and .net when the sites they serve are indistinguishable in overall purpose and function from .com?

they cost millions of dollars, and have to be approved by a board

I'm pretty sure I read a more recent article – from last year – that suggested it wasn't going to be quite as expensive. Maybe just a zero or two on the end. Hm.
Thanks for the link anyways.

everything I've read said low six figures. there's also huge amounts of opposition to the whole idea.

I'm currently working with a company who manage gTLD applications. I believe its around 200k to submit an application to ICANN, in most cases the budgets run from 1 - 10 million...
- Someone just shouted "$185k" at me from across the room.kingsteven

I really hate that a sole company has complete say over this sort of thing.
- yeah, it would be much better if they set up a non-profit organization to do it... oh wait.kingsteven
