I'm working with files that use DW templates that are locked.
How do I unlock this or edit the HTML?Thanks.

Modify>template>detach from template
Something in that menu should get you sorted, do you need to keep the template structure intact?

I have all these HTML pages I need to edit... but there are also these template files. home.dwt, pages.dwt...
I need to edit the other pages but do I edit the template files?
I've never worked with this kind of structure before.
I'm guess I have to keep with the same build as who ever built this using these dwt files

If you need to make a change to a section of the html that is controlled by the template then make your changes to the corresponding .dwt file (bear in mind this will update all html pages linking to that template).
Do you have the site setup in the 'site manager'? that should connect all the templates and such.

yes I have it set up in site manager.
Okay so to edit the HTML. I must only edit the DWT files.
But lets say there is a page that I want to use anoher template..
How do I change the HTML file to talk to another DWT file.
Because the HTML files are locked...

When I open the DWT files... there are still parts that are locked.
How do I unlock those?

hmmm been a looong time since I have dealt with DWTs...
to link a new template you need to detach the current then apply the new one (handled in the modify>template menu)
I think you may need to unlock regions in the same menu for the template files...google might be your best bet for the more in depth stuff

Just edit by hand outside DW. In the header there will be a reference to the template file being used. Change it there to the new one you want.

Why DW even locks the files in work view is ridiculous. I suspect the real reason for locking was for Contribute users, so leave the limitation to Contribute.
