I'm making the call tomorrow.
Anyone done this before who has some advice on keeping things positive and succinct?

from your other thread:
How to fire a client:
Call the client and say, "I don't think that we're a good fit. I don't think either of us is happy with where this is going, so I'm going to end this now before we get in too far. Here are some people you should talk to about your project that you'll probably be happier with. I really think you should call XYZ Company. Thank you very much for the opportunity to work together, I wish you all the best."

I'd write them a letter and then wait for them to acknowledge or phone you no?

When you call and fire them, be prepared for their attitude to change. Expect some surprise, "Really? I thought things were going really well. I had no idea you were unhappy. Is there anything I can change?"
Your client sounds like a dick, so it probably won't go down exactly like that, but I've seen it happen. Suddenly they want to be your best client EVAR, oh gosh what can I do to keep you. Have a response to this scenario ready. Either a stop-being-a-controlling-prick-a... response, or a no-really-you'll-be-much-happier... response. Your choice.
Either way, good luck.

In addition, I need to tell him that we're not refunding him everything he paid us. We did a shit ton of work, and we'll refund him a bit so that he only ends up paying 50%.
I'll return with the play by play.

My income increased by 40% when I started dumping problem clients. I spent a couple of years trying to learn how to better manage peple and then came to the realization that some people just cannot be managed. I also had two clients that I dumped come back to me in the last month. One offered an apology and wanted to know what terms I required to work with him again. Don't take crap from anyone.

^ Josev's advice to choose your battles is really sound advice..i know from experience..some clients are just vampires that will waste your time, your money, and your good mood.

just start charging double. either they leave or you get more cash and attempt to make the rectum-buster worthwhile.

Among his responses so far is this sterling selling point:
"You could expect this project to take a year or more as it is formed and grows. Consider that before letting go."- 'Hey, if you design me this logo for ten bucks, you'll get all kinds of business from me!' Sigh.Continuity

Well done, sir.
I'll bet this guy gets loads of spec work done for him from others.
