So, I've got a potential client asking me for references. Which, as a freelancer, I find a bit odd, since it sort of goes without saying that as a freelancer one will have fleeting, temporary contact with people. Not a lot to base references on there, you know?
I mean, looking at my samples from the past few years, there a surprising number of people I've worked for that I never even met! It was all handled by internet.
I still have refs from a in-house job I worked at 5 years ago. Those people know me well, and will say nice things. Not super current, eh?
What should I do? Go with old ones, or grovel to get some from freelance clients who hardly know me?

if you're freelancing for this client, give him other freelance clients as references. they don't need to be people that personally know you, just people that can attest to your work.

I've used my longterm freelance clients as references when requested. I just send them a short email first asking if it's cool. They always say yes. Nothing to lose really.
