What's the best way to set things up so traffic to my old domain is directed automatically to my new domain?

put this in the source of your old domain's index page:
<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;url=http://newdomain.com">- That's assuming he is still hosting his old domain.ETM

301 its the safest way and should help retain your seo google godness, you can even set up htaccess to automatically remap old paths to the new domain and dont forget to use google webmaster tools that your moving domains as this will help ease your pain.

I'm still hosting both domains. I still own both domains. With Media Temple. But I don't find any information on how to set up a re-direct on their online documentation.
- Its not something a host will usually for you. Either its at the registrar level (GoDaddy etc.) or by code you have to implement.ETM

the htaccess is something like:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.olddomain\.co\.uk
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.newdomain.co.uk/$1 [R=301,L]

Definitely a 301 redirect using .htacess
Easiest is here:
redirect 301 / http://www.newdomain.com- Why still pay for a second host account when you can manage this at the registrar level?ETM

acescence, why not use the meta tag re-direct? It seems to work. What's the downside?
