Any thoughts on the the future of design moving in a more interactive realm or more interaction design? I figure the latter is more lucrative and seems to be worthy of an investment to study.

There is no design without interaction....
I'm not sure what you are trying to ask.

Are you talking about a person who designs the interaction of a process or website versus the visual design??

interactive designer = pumping out flash banner ads at ad agency
interaction designer = designing use cases for digital watches

He's talking about Flashy HTML versus Infromation Architecture

@ukit yes, but also getting into interface design...for instance in computing the mouse is the most utilized way of human-computer interaction.
@Amicus print design does not have an interaction component it is static not dynamic. interaction implies a feedback loop.
@tOki designing the interaction of a process, or service could be the future...maybe that's system design...
anyway, not to sound like a dick but you guys have heard of Bill Moggridge right?- there are also others who want to create a transparent interface, or gesture based interface that moves beyond the keyboardDeIntegro

So maybe user interface design? I think of interaction design as being more about usability and not necessarily all that technical.
I agree this is a fascinating field. But I have no idea how you would pursue it, besides maybe getting a graduate degree somewhere.

Definitely more lucrative compared to designer positions. Quite a few colleges do post-grad courses in HCI or user experience design.
I learn a lot from following what goes on in the UX world but wouldn't want to devote myself to it and spend my days in some bastard child wireframe/prototyping program.

I applied to Parsons graduate degree in design and technology. I think I can get into usability and user interface design. It's not straight up HCI, but hopefully I'll get some of that if I get admitted.
