Hey, I've been searching for a photographer that I came across a long time ago. For some reason I forgot to bookmark, and for the life of me I can't remember his name or much about him.
I'll try to give the best description I can: He's a bit older (not sure if he's alive) and worked mostly in black & white film shooting fine art, from what I could tell. Looked like a lot of large format.
A lot of the images on his site are high contrast b&w, hard light, with a sort of optical illusion to them. He puts himself (and his wife, I think) in his photos sometimes, experimenting with size, perspective and shapes using a combination of camera and darkroom tricks.
He has a career spanning decades, and his website had a huge collection of work.
I remember seeing his site and being a little embarrassed that I hadn't heard of him before. He's really quite famous and his work is brilliant.
Sorry to be vague. Anyone have any ideas?
*Apologies to those who don't watch 30 Rock and don't get the subject reference.

mario sorrenti?

Nope, older than that. I think he'd been working since the 50s or earlier. I don't think his wife was so much a feature of the images, he just used her when he needed a person in the image and maybe didn't want to use himself...? I don't think she was a model.

what kind of subject matter? for those times, b&w at large format doesn't narrow it down much.

Hard to explain. Optical Illusions? I seem to remember one image where he was walking across a ladder that appeared to be laying flat across two ledges, although it's so minimal that you just see ladder, person, and giant shapes in either black or white.
The images are very graphic. Not graphic as in sex or violence, but graphic as in "graphic design."

helmut newton and irving penn both used their wife in their photos, used a lot of black and white, are famous, and had careers spanning decades. they're both dead:
(penn doesn't have a website)

Hmmm nope.
I think he only did a few photos of his wife. More with himself in the shots.

hmmm... i thought of philippe halsman when you mentioned the ladder, but afaik he doesn't have a website, and i dono about himself/his wife in the photos:

I don't recall him having any fashion or portraiture.
And if it helps, I think the site dedicated to him was organized by year or decade.
