How do you move the camera without changing the focus distance.
I've got the camera focused on an object that is far away from it, and I need to be able to zoom into that object, but still keep the focus on it. But when I move the camera that focus distance moves with it. There has to be a way to lock that down.

Parent it to a null object, and animate the null, not the camera.
- That doesnt work, it still moves the focus distance.CygnusZero4

PS - make the null a 3D layer, btw.

add an expression to the focus distance value connecting it to the object layer's position...perhaps?
- you don't want to 'lock it down' you want it to change with the camera's positoneieio
- or just zoomeieio
- Hmm.... sounds like it could work. No idea how to do it though.CygnusZero4
- look expressions up and the pick whip, simple really but its what you want i thinkeieio

I need to be able to zoom a camera in and out that has depth of field turn on, but not move the focus distance. This seems like a common thing ppl would need to do in AE, yet there's no clear way of doing it.

Is there som way to lock the focus distance to the cameras target? That's pretty much what I need to do, this way when I move the camera in, the focus distance doesnt change.
Maybe if Adobe feels like actually working on useful features rather than useless interface changes we might see this in CS9.

I'm having no issue with the focus distance staying the same. Is there a default setting that's been altered?
- I havent changed anything, but the focus distance is definitely moving when I move the null.CygnusZero4

pickwhip the focus distance to your point of interest

locustsloth - though you may need an expression, as i don't think they'd be the same valuelocustsloth
- Can you explain how to do this? I know what the pickwhip is, but there is only one for the camera itself.CygnusZero4

focus distance is the cam position zooming won't change it, when you move the camera the focus distance moves with it if you zoom the distance hasn't changed so it'll stay. so if you want to move the camera pick whip the focus distance to the layer's position value. you might have to make a more specific expression one value. if I've lost you its time you learn this because its pretty simple anyway

zooming in and out of the object will require the focus distance to change if you want the object to stay in focus.
as was said before, add an expression to the point of interest on the camera to the position of the object.

Jesus, just using the zoom feature fixed it. I was manually moving the camera. Im an idiot.

option click on the focus distance stopwatch button
and you'll see that a new pickwhip will show up just grab it and pull it towards the either the position or the point of interest of the camera
