Who's doing the best art on decks these days? I want to buy some to display in my apartment but I haven't skated in years and am kinda out of the loop now.
Habitat, Alien and Chocolate were doing some nice work last time I checked.
i think you need to make a clear difference between 'well designed' and 'well decorated'
skate decks get thrashed, so putting pretty pictures on the bottom isn't exactly smart design
^ I agree and disagree with ArsenicPants.
On one hand, from the standpoint of a designer, it'd be a shame to see a beautiful deck get thrashed. That being said, isn't that the whole point of skating?
Skate culture is about making something beautiful out of something common. There is also something in skateboarding that is dedicated to the damage achieved through strong skating; the mocking of anything elite or refined. The fact that decks have become a surface for good design should never dissuade a skater from doing whatever they need with it to express themselves and achieve all that they want.
I'm reminded of a brilliantly humbling process that tibetan monks engage in — the sand mandala:
The monks create dozens of vials of colored sand. This sand is used to create intricately ornate designs—often over ten feet in diameter—by trickling small amounts of this sand over a flat surface in tiny, linear mounds. After many days of doing this, they have a wonderful piece of design, around which they pray for several days more.
Then—this is the beauty of it all—they simply sweep all of the sand up by their hands, careful not to miss a grain, and toss it into the sea. This is the life and death of a beautiful skate deck, to me.
All of this is temporary. Grab your board.
might be best to get some old ones off ebay.
im not a fan of decks that are too heavily handed by graphic designers. i dig the simplicity of the Enjoi decks. i used to like those alien/habitat decks that Pendleton did. you could just stop by a few skateshops and see what catches your eye...
get some inspiration from this thread:
OMG rascuache, those are gorgeous! Where can I buy them?
Bump, like this thread and could always use a new board...
