After Effects layer style

I'm trying to create a halo effect over my whole movie. Sort of a pinhole look, I took a solid, made it comp size, applied a gradient overlay style, Edited the gradient Colors so it was the same color on both stops but 0 opacity on the left stop.
Then, I went into Advanced Blending under Layer styles on that layer and changed Fill Opacity to 0.
I'm not getting any opacity.
What am I missing?

And I don't want to change the layer mode of the whole solid.

try collapsing transformations

Fill opacity to 0 seems like the issue. I could be wrong, I really have no idea though.

I already had fill opacity under advanced blending options at 0 which you need, but you also have to collapse transformations.

alternately, you could have used a shape layer which would get you a little more control over your end look, not to mention if you ever needed to animate it.
