The iPhone reception in San Francisco is absolutely horrible.
What are the alternatives?
My biggest concern is reception and compatability with my MacBook Pro.
Do any phones stack up to the iPhone when it comes to Apps and compatability with iPhoto, iTunes, iCal, etc?
Are any phones compatible with this software?

I live in Cole Valley, work SOMA/China Beach. I can't make a call from either place.
My commute goes through SOMA, Upper Market, Lower/Upper Haight and I can't make a call in these spots either... Call Failed.
Since I can't make or receive a call in 90% of the places I spend most of my time, I'm seriously ready to give up.
Are any phones compatible with Apples software?

And are Apps comparable?

Wow, this is why I don't have an iPhone yet. I've heard similar stories from friends in NY. My officemate has one and ended up putting in a landline because he cant get reception in or neighborhood.

its bad in SF. A little better in the east bay. Basically, in sf it changes with every 100 yards. Downtown is especially spotty. Nothing to be done about it, way too expensive to hop from carrier to carrier trying to find a match. haxx0rd iphone works on tmobile, i think, if you are feeling adventurous.

I have the most basic plan and I don't think it would even be possible for me to use all the minutes if I tried because of all the reception/dropped call issues.
- still you pay for something that isn't working correctly.akrokdesign

Just use your iphone on a different carrier. Used to have sprint and loved the reception never missed any calls or anything but I don't know how easily the iphone would work on there service. I use tmobile now and honestly have never had bad reception with them even when I went to Alaska; but at least I know its not hard to hook up and iphone on their service.

my phone was terrible, call failed 95% of the time. noticed that other people i worked with, plus my wife on her iphone, all were much better than mine. took it in and they got me a new phone for free. work in soma, live by the panhandle fyi
- all phones/people's phones refer to iphones in this post.cuke426

I live in San Francisco, hayes valley / lower haight. I have Sprint/Nextel and it has been sucking the past 6 months with my voice failing. Not dropped calls, just my voice dropping in and out, . . . I hear the caller on my end, no problem. so frustrating. I have called Sprint to complain at least 12 times. They have even given me a replacement phone just like the previous. Still the problem persists. They have no explanation.
Never had a problem before. Nextel was the best. been with Nextel for at least 6 years.- I would love an iPhone, but i have heard all the bad stories here about the reception. Will def. wait it out.arterie

at&t is a gsm network, sprint is cdma, so not compatible. i'm tempted to get an android on sprint though. their customer service sucks, and the quality may be as bad as at&t, but at least it's a third of the price for the same plan!

Apple gave me a new phone today. So far it's way better but not perfect. If problems persist I'll have to jump ship to verizon and a Droid.

Let us know how it works out. I think the consensus is just to haxor your iPhone and move to T-Mobile.
