This may seem silly, but have you tried a replacement pen on your Intuos?
I have had a Graphire 4 for quite some time now and treat it with total disregard, and it still works perfectly fine. It "broke" once and all it was was the pen nib had broken - The units themselves seem flimsy but are actually quite sturdy.
It's an obvious mistake someone might make, and could save you many a pound/dollar/euro/yen.

Bamboo first generation works for me. So I'd guess the second generation is even better. Not a great range of sensitivity levels though, so be warned.
- yeah thats what worries me a little, never used anything else so not sure how bad it would beinstil_design
- but i only use it for illustrating and a bit of retouching..instil_design

The Bamboo has 512 levels of pressure sensitivity while the Intuos has 2048. The Intuos also adds tilt recognition and double the resolution as well as extra keys and more real estate. It's pretty obvious which is better.
