Time Machine with external drives

I'm pretty sure there's a way to get Time Machine to back up files on an external drive as well as the stuff on your startup drive. I don't have my drive set up to be excluded from backups. When I go into Time Machine, As soon as I go back in time, the icon for my new drive becomes greyed out. Any suggestions?
I searched for this topic in Filter and came up empty. The Googles weren't much help either.

Do you mean back up TO an external drive, or FROM the external to your internal drive?

just used SuperDuper over the weekend.....super duper easy.

actually i don't think you can include externals in your TM backup set.
multiple volumes on your startup volume yes, but additional drives i dunno... i have a feeling not.

i'm actually curious to know as well...
we know the option to exclude drives is there, but does anyone actually have multiple drives successfully backing to one TM disk?
i have multiple volumes backing no problem, but once got into a debate with an apple dealer who claimed that was not even possible.

I think that option is only to exclude.

I'll check when I get home, but I am definitely backing up my internal and external drives

I figured it out. By default, Time Machine will put your external drives on the excluded list. So, you have to go to the System preferences > Time Machine > Options. Then, click on the "-" button (just above "Notify after old backups are deleted", then go to your external drive and select it. Now you list should not have you drive and when you back up, your drive will be backed up. You'll probably notice that it's working by how long that first backup takes. (If you have something substantial on your external drive)
