The art director directs the designer.

most designers think that they are full of shit until they become one?
- Is that a question or a statement?monospaced
- i am not sure... does it deserve to be a statement?CALLES
- I dunno, you asked/stated it. Don't you know how to use a question mark correctly?monospaced

Depending on the company, sometimes the titles are synonymous (usually in design firms). In agencies, art directors can be anywhere from junior on up to senior. A DD in an Agency is usually over ADs, and under a CD.

By the way, I've never liked the term Creative Director, i.e. using creative as a pronoun or a noun. I used to get so annoyed when I worked at agencies that would refer to developing "the creative."
It's a freaking adjective. Leave it alone.
Design Director sounds so much better imo.

- In the term "Creative Director," it is being used as an adjective. When people say 'the creative', they're just omitting a noun.luckyorphan
- developing 'the creative [concept][idea][work... They're just being lazy.luckyorphan

One directs art. The other directs design.
- UM.... gonna have to go with FALSE on this one. At least for Digitalwordsinyourmouth3
- especially for smaller companies.wordsinyourmouth3

^ but the question is... is design art?

the black and white distinction i'm familiar with is that the art director will direct the art; meaning they will develop and determine the look and feel of a project.
A design and/or creative director will often direct the designers/creatives more logistically to keep employees on task.
Although, as gramme stated, they are typically synonymous. I think the smaller you get the more the line is blurred for an 'art' or 'design' director.
- the smaller the dick, right?monospaced
- because my dick is so big that they made me art director even though I was only a junior designermonospaced
- you are so consumed by dick this morning, mono.iCanHasQBN
- adicksaystwat?d_rek
- My dick is so big that I direct the creatives with it. Mostly from my desk, with the legs up the table.clearThoughts

I was just looking at some job descriptions and it said that as an Art Director you will be reporting to a Design Director and Creative Director.
But then I've seen a lot of magazines that list an Art Director above a Design Director.
I guess in a magazine the Art Direction has more to do with the photography and illustration...

if i owned a company id bill a cd as "creativity director" and watch him stew behind his nameplate

How about a Director of Awesome or an Awesome Director.
- d_rek0
Not to derail this thread but has anyone worked with any 'self taught' Design/Creative Directors? I kind of laughed when I heard this.
- Define "self-taught."luckyorphan
- self-taught = Having the practical experience, but not necessarily the skillset to execute or envision somethingd_rek

Many of the original designers were self-taught, simply because there was no such thing as an art or design school. However, many new areas of disciplines come about but come from other areas of expertise.
- school has been around for a long time.refunktion
- the focus is on specific disciplines that even now are emerging.whatsup
