Tonal variations can be created using similar techniques to creating gradiation in other single-colour processes.

It depends whether you're talking cutting or engraving.

It's *possible* in laser cutting, though there are material limitation considerations. I've done few nits and pieces using Rasterbator to mock newspaper-esque halftones in vector. Obvisouly there are some issues where islands are concerned!

It's quite easy in engraving/marking though, again, principal amongst considerations are those that are material. Output resolution should also be thought about here - the higher the resolution attained, the slower and therefore more costly the process. My machine does 1200dpi, for example - which gives very high output, but costs an absolute fortune if I'm charging per minute.

However, there are shortcuts and techniques (changing the bed height, etc) that can be played with.

If you can provide more details, either here or directly in an email to me (check my profile), I might be able to assist. I'm based in London.

fyi - it's generally called laser cutting/engraving, rather than 'printing' :) Signed, a pernickety git
