Nothing new here. You get what you pay for.

Number of Designers:
59,178
Prize Money Awarded:
$9,376,294
Total Designs submitted:
3,661,377
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -So, they awarded 9 million dollars for more than 3 million designs have been submitted. That means that the average price for each design is, what $3.00. Of course some would argue that the best designs always win and that this filters out the bad designers. So it's possible that the good designers got paid way more. We all know that the client always picks the best design.
There are 59,178 designers. If you divided the prize money up among them it averages $158.00. There's probably another way to look at these numbers and put a positive spin on this but I don't see it at the moment. There was a thread on UnderConsideration.com/BrandNew where almost half of the people argued that this is the future of design.
- "for the more than 3 million designs that have been"Josev
- actually, they've been in business for four years. Divide that $158 by four and you get $39.50 per designer.Josev
- lunch money! lol.akrokdesign

It's now time to find a serious exit plan.
maybe set up a logo farm somewhere in china or just give up everything and become a cook.

How do they deal with font licensing?
- i am sure that you "the designer" are responsible for all that stuff.akrokdesign
- they wrote it like that for their benefits of course.akrokdesign

Hate the player, not the game

So on average, how long would it take to trace a logo from here.
15 minutes? 20 tops?Who wants to start a new dotcom business with me where we offer clients the ability to tell us which logo they like on 99designs.com and we'd email them back a customized logo for $70.
Seriously.

It will do to design what iStockphoto.com did to photography. Slowly fucking kill it.

it's threatening isn't it?
there is a place for this and it's a good thing. if i was starting a small business this would be a wise choice for design. spending a lot of money with a small agency isn't in the interest of the startup client.
but for larger projects with an understanding of the market, for long term client relationships, in depth understanding of the brand, etc. this is not the way to go.
Like istockphoto, it will give people more options, and sharpen up the average business that are charging clients for stuff they should be able to get cheaper.
IMO.

looks better than most "designer"-logos posted for critique on this board

At least with this system, people pay the designer for logo. The 'competitions' are worse in my opinion.
