FFS.
A good lesson for noob freelancers: do not be affraid to ask the hourly rate you need. Cuz fuckin' hell, I'm down right to the skinny. No bob. No bling. I even had to apply for this degrading artists' allowance.
Oh and why the hell don't clients pay their bills on time?

"Oh and why the hell don't clients pay their bills on time?"
is that a rhetorical question, or do you really want to know the answer?
- The answer is a timeless secret, which no one actually knows.dMullins

If it's not an ongoing gig, but just a one-shot project, ask for 1/4 to 1/2 up front

clients don't pay their bills on time because they know they can get away with it.
in other words: you are small fry, and a pushover.
(not to be insulting -- i am also getting reamed by my clients in this aspect)

its always worked me for, when it comes to freelance, is to give them low-res JPGs of the work, let them approve and then wait for them to pay you for the final artwork. Works with websites - just makes sure you dont hand over files/turn it live until theyve paid.
