I finally realized I really really want one after traveling for business this past week. I could have gotten away with an ipad as my meeting didn't require a laptop since our creative director brought hers. Would have been great to have on the plane - especially considering the music sequencing / synth apps that are out there, or ability to watch movies, etc. Also, at home to use it as a control surface for Logic Pro - that's pretty bad ass.
Also, coworkers are now using them with a stylus to take notes and synch notes to OneNote or something like that so that it's on their computers and phones. Really great way of working and that alone kind of sold me on it.
I've got the day off today and I woke up thinking I'd go get one... Just procrastinating now. i know the new ones are around the corner, but I don't know if the assumed features are must-have ones? I don't want a camera on the back; that is stupid. The front facing camera would be nice.
What to do, what to do...
- wait for it.jetSkii

my 4 year old uses it all the time now. mainly for videos, angry birds, cut the rope, flash dev and dos attacking. i use it alot as well for web lurking in pajamas before nigh-nights. i suppose the question would be, does it suit your routine and needs for drive-by web surfing and entertainment. fits mine.

for the record, there is no doubt the touch screen interface of the ipad and iphone is fantastic, it WAS unrivaled.
I love my iphone and i bought it because it was the best touch screen phone out, because android at the time was laggy and slow.
But now with the new chipsets, new android, they are equally as fast and as smooth as the ipad / iphone, but with a lot more features and freedom to do as you choose with it.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
^new chipset to be featured in android tablets, released towards the end of january. Much more powerful than any chipset in any ipad, or android tablet.
The beauty of getting an android tablet is that the good manufacturers wont with hold certain features. Like apple do with the camera, or an SD card clot, or a USB port so that they can make a new one with that feature and make you buy a new one,

when does apple usually release new products?

Not yet. The new is coming out in 2 months or so, and it will have webcam and more. Even though it's awesome, I'll wait for the second gen.

It is not wise to get an ipad now.
First there are a ton of better Android tablets coming, but iPad 2 is so close that you would be naive to waste money on 1st gen iPad now.

The only things I like it for is reading my RSS/news feeds in Feeedler or Flipboard and watching small video clips since it's very portable (although it is a little heavy for longer readings. Well it's not 'heavy' but it's definitely not like holding a magazine in your hand).
Everything else I'd rather do on my MBP. Typing is still difficult, which then affects using email and the shitty mobile browser Safari. I guess you could attach the iPad keyboard but then why not just use a laptop.
I don't see the iPad or anything other similar tablet device overtaking a real productive device like a laptop. iPad is more like a quick entertainment device. Look up some news, read a book, or check the internet form some quick info.
It's essentially a big ass iPhone.

Zinio is freaking terrible, though. The only digital magazines I can stand to read are built on the Adobe or Woodwing app platforms.

Even though it's all still very alpha, I do enjoy reading magazines, and to a lesser degree books, on my iPad. I did read Vinh's post, though, and agree with most of what he said. It is indeed an entirely new medium, and will take people a while to figure out how to design accordingly.
My wife uses it for email, playing around online, etc. during the day when she's multitasking with our kids.

What’s Old Is New Again on iPad
by Khoi Vinh"It won’t be a surprise to anyone familiar with my writings in the past on similar subjects that I very much believe that the iPad is something entirely new, and that it should be treated as such. But it’s worth noting that the current prevailing perception of the iPad seems to be that it is a digital reinvention of analog conventions."

Next update for the iPad (iOS 4.2) will change a lot of that. To be released around November.
Makes a huge difference. I bought one recently and am loving it.
Best app so far is Flipboard. Awesome way to browse content.Any other recommendations?
