anyone ever do any laser cutting for intricate die cut stuff. do they still make a die or is it a die free process? ever experience any 'burning' of the stock?

I've done intricate laser cutting. Burning can happen, but you should just address that with the printer. I think dies are just for die-cuts, though. Frickin' lasers! Throw me a bone here!

You will generally see a slight discoloration on the cut edge, especially with white stock. Use a darker stock or bleed graphics to help cover the burn up, but not completely. Also, talk to your print rep.

You might also consider 'plastic paper', such as Tyvek, which generally doesn't char.

die-free.
you can also waterjet cut. No burning, no die.

burning will always happen but unless the stock is left white a good company will make it barely obvious.
