This is a disasterous move. Is the old theming completely gone? Looks like we're stuck with ugly FF buttons and tabs layout, with a new option to set up a background underneath them.

OK, old themes still work and still need a restart to be applied. The personas gizmo will appeal to most computer users, who like when stuff looks like shit.
I understand Mozilla policy here. Just like in democracy, you need to get the majority of idiots on your side to win.This is how I like my FF btw. http://www.takebacktheweb.org/

Raf,
Fact is, customization is an aspect of a product that appeals to a lot of users. Granted, most of the 'personas' available take the word tacky to a whole new level...
that being said, technical nerdery aside, why the hell wouldn't you just use safari instead of skinning FF to look like safari?

It doesn't look like safari to me, it looks 'generic' ;)
I tried to switch to safari. I use it as a secondary browser, have a number of issues with it, most presumably coming from being accustomed to certain UI behaviours, ie. :—safari doesn't ask you if you want to download a file when it has downloadable mimetype. It always downloads it;
—when downloading, safari doesn't append last saved date to the file, keeping its original date intact. It's hard to sort by last downloaded.
—safari doesn't add 'www.' and '.com' in address bar when you press Cmd+Enter;
—firefox's bookmark management leaves a lot to be desired, but safari's isn't any better;
—safari doesn't display 'title' or 'alt' attribute when you keep cursor over a link, it displays the link (which should be in status bar, safari's default design assumes you have it hidden);
—I prefer Firebug to webkit's inspector;
—I have greasemonkey scripts running on my ff that ie. make my QBN browsing easier ( http://www.qbn.com/topics/552158… );
—I prefer Firefox's password management and form filling.Didn't know there were so many, I'm just warming up, haha...

Persona's suck

The problem with personas is, there is hardly a way to make your browser look better if you overlay it with an image.
No matter how long you browse, they all look like shit. A few solids might be acceptable, but completely unnecessary.

scared the shit out of me when I installed 3.6 and hovered the imgs

As long as they keep both, I'll be happy and the idiots will also be happy.

from a design point of view, skinning your browser of choice is a bit like asking a chef if you can add ketchup to his soup.
These companies spend a lot of time thinking about the usability, and with every update, they try harder or make minor improvements - albeit, not very well sometimes. but by skinning it, you're missing out.
i rekon anyways.
leave it alone, get on with your work/play/porn

I must say, the 3.6 is snappissimo. Even flash videos run smother in it.

For whoever finds the new, IE-like tab order irritating:
about:config
browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterC... set to 'false'

Not that I'll really use it much - but the personas thing is a stroke of genius. A simple, apparently idiot-proof, means of personalising the primary-use program for most punters on their computers? This has been a long time coming.
I can't wait to see what innovative use of this function all the advertising and marketing companies come out with.
I only thank Christ I'm not an IT person, so don't have to witness the wide variety of utter gash users will deface their interface with.
But hey, we wouldn't all be on a snooty design forum if the masses had taste, would we?

Perhaps I'm just really stupid - but how on Earth do I create my own persona (out of context, that sounds like a terrible question...)?
I want to try out a transparent png..
- oh, forget it - I just need to create a theme. My bad, i though it was something different.detritus

The only reason I do not use Firefox as my main browser, is ONLY because I can't Option+Up Arrow/Down Arrow to jump pages on a site. This is critical for me. If you can do it on Firefox without using Page Up / Page Down, I've yet to figure out how...
