hint: rather than just searching for vidoes, you can also just add the video id of any Vimeo video to the end of the URL.

There's a multimedia framework called gstreamer which can also do this. Might be worth checking out if you like this kind of thing.
You can use it to take any video stream (e.g. from a file or a camera) and apply one or more real-time filters. One of the standard filters is an ASCII filter .. it's pretty good; wouldn't surprise me if asciimeo.com are using something similar.

i wonder if they are using pixel bender. seems like you could use a custom pixel bender filter to do the image analysis (because it would be fast) you could then output the appropriate ascii values to flash. or for the people that complain about flash - only use flash to process, then use the external interface to update an html page with real text.
